Outside Logan, Utah

This is the view from the south edge of Utah State's campus. Its fairly hard to capture how immense these mountains are; they don't seem distant, but they loom on the horizon and are ever-present.

Lorrie and I had an interesting conversation about how geologic features like this give context to our existence in a way that you don't appreciate living on a plain.

The outside of the Chicago Fire's stadium - I've seen this technique of building an earth berm in several stadia, and it seems like a decent idea; the argument appears to be that its both cheaper to pile dirt than build a structure, as well as future planned expansion would start from the higher ground plane (also lowering costs)

Flowers

Taking some cues from Carole and Erin, I've started trying to photograph flowers. I'm not sure how skilled I'll prove at it, but it's been an interesting process.

This is a fountain on Utah State's campus in Logan, Utah. Walking around the fountain, it was incredible to me how the water bulged when flowing over this lip; the surface of the water drops about half an inch.

Interesting Canopies

Interesting Canopies

When I first saw these canopies I swore that they were detailed based on the default canopy in Autodesk Revit. After looking at their details a few more times today, I'm not sure that's the case - but they do catch my eye a bit.

Carole's much better at this photograph than I am, but I still enjoy a closeup of a single flower bloom like this.

Utah State Tower

Utah State Tower

This is the most visible tower on Utah State's campus. As we walked toward campus this morning, it was the thing we used to make sure we were still heading in the right direction.

The "A" on the top is for the school's nickname, the Aggies.

Toyota Park Parking Lot

Every so often I hear Chicago fans mock the Columbus Crew stadium because we're located on the state fairgrounds, and our stadium is very plain, and our parking lots get muddy. The next time I hear this complaint I'm going to remember this photograph of the Toyota Park parking area.

I finally had a chance tonight to watch Danah Boyd’s full presentation on Social Networks from this year’s Aspen Institute Festival ( http://www.aifestival.org ). If you’re at all interested in this phenomena, particularly as they’re seen by people who are growing up around and within them (i.e. “digital natives”), this is required viewing. Boyd traces the history of socializing online from the early days of Usenet, through mailing lists and Friendster to our current smorgasbord of platforms. There are a few completely eye-opening slides (which are unfortunately only sometimes shown on camera), and she presents some thought-provoking perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of this phenomenon.

It is particularly interesting to me as we consider implementing some sort of student community resource for our school. Some of her notes about the lack of interoperability between the large social networks gives me an idea for how such a niche resource might stitch together a disparate community whose students are probalby coming to us with a well-established digital presence.
